Whether you are new to gardening or have been gardening for years Host Casey Hentges shares five ways to have a successful garden this summer.

1:57 Soil Preparation
1) Soil Testing: A soil test will give you a measurement of the fertility in your soil that is available to the plants.
2) Remove old plant debris from ornamental and vegetable gardens.
3) Remove old potting soil from containers and refill with new soil.

8:10 Planting
1) Indoor Seed Starting: starting your seeds early will save you money, offer a greater selection of plants to grow, and gives your garden a head start on the season.
2) Direct Sowing Seeds: saves space, allows plants to adapt to the environment, and fewer supplies are needed than indoor seed starting.
3) Transplanting: a very convenient option for planting that requires less preparation and provides instant garden gratification.

12:30 Pruning
1) Determining whether the shrub or tree blooms on new wood or old wood will let you know when that shrub or tree is going to flower.
2) Trim out dead and diseased plant material first, then trim out any crossing branches.
3) Create an open canopy to allow better airflow which will reduce the potential for plant diseases.
4) Don't remove more than 1/3 of the plant.

16:48 Weeding
1) Regular garden inspection will prevent weeds from becoming a big problem.
2) Add mulch to the garden to prevent weed seeds from germinating.
3) Treat the garden with pre-emergent herbicide to prevent weed seeds from germinating and if they are already present use appropriate post-emergent herbicide which will cause those weeds to die.

21:01 Watering/Irrigation
1) Perform an irrigation system audit to ensure that you don't have any leaks and that the water is going where you want it to.
2) Using tools such as faucet timers and drip irrigation simplifies the irrigation process and can decrease water loss to evaporation.
3) Containers and hanging baskets tend to dry out faster, so keep an eye on them.
4) Put your garden somewhere that it is visible and easily accessible if you are only hand watering by hose.
