A deep interest in food advocacy is what led Ruth Ann Foster to Hawthorn’s doctoral program where she has developed a rigorous foundation for nutrition education and policymaking. In this webinar, along with discussing her approach to food advocacy, Ruth Ann will also highlight a few legislative issues facing us today. As a rabid researcher, Ruth Ann will share her dissertation experience and the importance of qualitative research in advocacy and policymaking.


Hawthorn University's All About Alumni Webinar Series presents Politics at the Table – An Unexpected Journey from Food Advocacy to Nutrition Literacy with Dr. Ruth Ann Foster (DSc Graduate 2020).


Ruth Ann Foster earned a Doctorate of Science in Holistic Nutrition through Hawthorn University. During her studies, Dr. Foster also completed the UNC Chapel Hill Nurse Refresher Program to reactivate her RN license. As a veteran nutrition researcher and advocate, Dr. Foster has testified at the North Carolina Legislature since 2006. She has worked with numerous representatives including Senator Kay Hagan in North Carolina and Washington DC, educating and advocating on several food-related and social issues.


Prior to raising and homeschooling three children, Dr. Foster worked in the film and television industry. She pioneered non-linear, aka computer film editing in Hollywood, New York, Toronto, Dublin, and London. Her interest in nutrition began working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. While raising her family, the importance of nutrition in health grew from a hobby into an obsession, directing her towards doctoral studies.


Across her varied careers, the common thread in Dr. Foster’s body of work includes a passion for inspiring others through innovative problem solving and creative information sharing. Combing her careers in nursing, film production and nutrition, Dr. Foster’s next goal is to produce a documentary highlighting the importance of magnesium in drinking water.
