In the Spotlight: Spinel ❤️

Spinel has been around for centuries masquerading as Ruby, but it wasn’t until 1783 that a mineralogist identified Spinel as being a different mineral. If I’m being honest I think Spinel is way cooler than Ruby, due to their awesome history (which I’ll share), the fact that they too fluoresce under UV light, their clarity and lustre and that they’re super hardy (rating an 8 on the Moh scale).

“The famous 14th Century Black Prince’s Ruby in the British Imperial Crown is actually a Spinel” - GIA. What is the Black Prince’s Ruby and why is it interesting? The Black Prince’s Ruby started out in the possession of Prince Abu Sa’id of the Moorish Kingdom of Granada during the 14th Century. Due to some gory politics going on at the time he was killed by Don Pedro the Cruel and his jewels taken, one of which was the Black Prince’s Ruby (Spinel). When Don Pedro also had to flee, he sought refuge with the Black Prince in Bordeaux. Don Pedro exchanged treasure (spinel included) with the Black Prince (his real name was Edward of Woodstock - apparently he wore a LOT of black clothing 🤣) in return for military support in 1367.
