It’s probably the most famous Christmas tree in the world, and its lighting-up ceremony has come to signify the beginning of the Christmas season in the British capital. Since 2009, The Poetry Society has commissioned a new poem inspired by the gift of the Trafalgar Square Christmas tree.
2024's poem is 'A Baby and A Tree' by Valerie Bloom. It is on display around the base of the Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square over the festive period and was premiered at the lighting up ceremony on 5 December by three children from St Vincent's Catholic Primary School: Aiden, Erietta and Sebastian. They were three of the children who took part in free poetry workshops in Westminster schools organised by The Poetry Society and run by poets Coral Rumble and Cheryl Moskowitz.
