The number of people displaced by an erupting volcano in the Philippines soared to more than 61,000 by Jan. 24, after two eruptions. The lava as high as 700 meters and ash 3 kilometers up in the air. The second eruption happened on Tuesday, producing an ash column at least 5 kilometers high. Mount Mayon, located about 330km southeast of the capital Manila, is considered to be the most volatile of the Philippines' 22 active volcanoes.

The Philippines is part of the Pacific "Ring of Fire" islands that were formed by volcanic activity. Mount Mayon has erupted over 50 times in the past 500 years and the most deadly eruption was in 1814, when the ashes buried a small town, killing more than 1,000 people.
