Nestlé Accused of Adding Sugar to Baby Food in Africa: Double Standards Exposed?

A new investigation by Public Eye has uncovered that Nestlé, the world’s biggest baby food maker, is still adding sugar to most Cerelac baby cereals sold in African countries. Lab tests on 94 samples from more than 20 countries found over 90% contained added sugar — some with up to 7.3 grams per serving. Meanwhile, similar products sold in Europe contain zero added sugar.

Health experts call this a dangerous double standard — especially since the World Health Organization recommends no added sugar for children under three. Campaigners warn this could fuel rising childhood obesity and diabetes in Africa.

Nestlé denies any wrongdoing — saying it follows local laws, uses sugar to fight malnutrition, and that it’s rolling out sugar-free products. Activists say it’s too little, too late.
