This one for some reason always sounded like a theme song for a spy movie. The repeating descending riff on the intro and at the middle eight; like Johnny Rivers' "Secret Agent Man."y

OK. OK. Let's all of us sort this out together. There are three distinctly different mixes at play here. Motown was not afraid to remix a song a billion times to nail the perfect mix and so far, in doing these videos, "Mood of Marvin Gaye" and Stevie Wonder's "Uptight" are leading with the most bewildering amount of mixes and variations. So let's jump in:

0:00 Mono Album Mix/ 45 Mono Mix First Pressing. According to notes in "The Complete Motown Singles," this is the second mix this song received. It was used on the Mono album as well as being used for the first pressing of the 45. The sound is bright. Those handclaps I'm sure cut right through any static you might have encountered on AM radio. Everything here sounds vibrant and exciting.

3:02 Stereo Album Mix

6:06 Mono 45 Mix Second Pressing This was the first mix this record received and it was done by Mr. Berry Gordy. This is what went out for the second pressing of the single. Is it just me? It can't be just me. This one sounds so thoroughly muddy and muddled and blunted. EVERYTHING here sounds as if there was a concerted effort to erase anything even remotely approaching the high end of the sound spectrum. In fact, I keep thinking someone found a very old cassette tape that was the 50th copy, added tons of otherworldly echo and pressed the records from it. How on earth did this sound on radio?
