I’m Doug. I’ve been playing saxophone on and off for 40+ years, started in grade 8 at 13 years old. It’s spent some years in the case, not much development. I spent more time developing on the guitar than sax. I attended Grant MacEwan in Edmonton, Alberta from 1991-1993 graduating with a Diploma in Music Performance. The saxophone didn’t get played much for about 20 years…

Then I pulled it out again about 15 years ago as I was playing a jazz combo that needed that more than guitar, and I started transferring all that guitar stuff to the sax. Then after a move, the saxophone spent another 5 years or so in the case, until 2 years ago. I decided I wanted to get back into it and actually learn how to play better, sound better, and that’s become a focus of my “hobby time”.

Not here to impress or anything, just playing for fun.

My main gig is being the Lead Pastor at Gospel Chapel in Grand Forks BC. I have a BA in Christian Ministry from Briercrest Bible College, and a Master of Theological Studies: Old Testament Specialization from ACTS Seminaries / Trinity Western University. So that’s the day job…if pastoring could be considered a “day job”…

My set up is pretty basic and probably could use an upgrade, but that’s money. The advice I’ve heard from many pro level players and educators is: get a good mouthpiece, decent reeds, and work on your sound - gear is wholly secondary. So here’s the gear:

Tenor Sax: Jupiter JTS587 with a Jody Jazz HR* 6; Rovner Light ligature; D’addario Royals 2.5 or 3.
Alto Sax: Jupiter SAS767 with a Meyer 5; similar reeds.
Baritone Sax: Yanagisawa 991 - stock MP.
