Jerry Young underwent a routine endoscopy and assumed the hoarseness in his voice was just an after-effect of it. A ear, nose and throat physician thought the redness on Young’s left vocal cord was merely caused by a virus. Young did his own research and suspected he may have cancer. He turned to Edward J. Damrose, MD, director of the Stanford Voice and Swallowing Center.
Dr. Damrose performed a surgery (done only at a few medical centers in the U.S.) and saved Young’s ability to speak without inserting any mechanical equipment into his neck.
