I first started Blurstem as a side project to Elskavon - simply as a late-night piano improvisational outlet for myself. My wife and I had bought our first house, had our first child, and in that beautiful whirlwind time of life, I found solace in late nights on a quiet, felted piano. That’s where my first album, Among the Oaks, came from. Eight years later, I went back into the folder of some of those early recordings, finding bits and pieces I never ended up developing. It was like listening to something distant, and yet, so close, so familiar. The sound, the improvisations, brought me right back to being a new parent, and yet also felt like I could have written them yesterday.

Instead of simply releasing them as is - since, it seemed to me they were not meant to be simply as they were - I decided to take some of my favorite moments and use that as a canvas to create something new - a journey from the fragments.

Fallen Fragments is the result.

It’s an album that invokes those distant memories and brings a new sonic touch to them. They are nothing more than simple, emotive piano pieces, and yet, brought to so much more: bathed in analog tape loops, painted with reverb-soaked layers, warped in time experiments, reversed, pitched up and down, chopped and repeated.

Much in the same way that the younger version of myself I find when I listen back to the initial recordings is still fully connected to my self today when I write this, the songs themselves do not live in isolation - the album starts, and it finishes, but the songs themselves bleed into each other throughout the whole journey - they blend from one to the next. Fragmentary, distant - yet close, connected.

It makes me wonder. Eight years from today, what will I find in myself? What will bring me back then?
