Teaching dances of the African diaspora in Education with Sekou Miller Date: 10/10/2021
As part of the Afro Atlantic online conversations, in partnership with the USA embassy in Lisbon, Batoto Yetu Portugal invited trailblazer dance artist, performer and choreographer Sekou McMiller who is based in New York. Sekou is a practitioner in Afro-Cuban folklore and Jazz, his particular style and dance methodology has earned him teaching opportunities in prestigious dance education institutions in New York, in the commercial dance sector, in film, theater, all across the US, Canada and Europe. Sekou discussed how as an African-american male, he got into Afro-Latin dance styles and opened up a new world for him. We also discussed african diasporic dance styles in education, mentor ship and the embodiment of the african dance aesthetic and what it means in the dance space across the different performative and educational platforms.
"At the forefront of a new movement in dance, Sekou McMiller unique fusion style has an Afro-Caribbean and West African essence that is laced with many different dance techniques. Combined with an explosive energy, Sekou’s dancing and choreography have garnered him broad recognition worldwide that spans from Broadway to the international underground latin scene. He is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Afro-Latin Dance Company, Sekou McMiller Dance Co and was a choreographic fellow for the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation’s New Directions Choreography lab Winter/Spring 2017. In addition He has performed and choreographed for Top Latin artist such as Gilberto Santa Rosa, Willie Colon, Cheo Feliciano, Johnny Pacheco, Tito Rojas, Tito Nieves, PitBull, as well as the pop icon Madonna. Featured in the up coming movie “In the Heights”. Currently Sekou is a faculty member at Steps on Broadway, Ailey Extension, Ballet Hispánico, and Broadway Dance Center.
Over 20 yrs Internationally performed/choreographed/instructed in over 20 countries and over 60 cities including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seoul, Tokyo, Beijing, Singapore, Mumbai, Shanghai, Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Quebec, Manchester, Warsaw, Mexico City, Puerto Rico, Rome, Paris, Istanbul, Monaco, Brussels and many other international hubs of dance."
