Call to action from Dr. Aja McCuten:
1) It’s important to get screened for colorectal cancer. If you are 45 years of age or older please get screened. Additionally, if you have a family history of colon cancer, make sure you talk to your doctor about starting screenings at age 40 or 10 years before the family members age at diagnosis.
2) Despite the American cancer society’s recommendations for screening, only 20% of black people age 45-49 have been screened. A colonoscopy can detect and remove polyps, which are precancerous growths in the colon that may lead to colon cancer. Removal of these polyps decreases risks of colon cancer. There are also non invasive screening test. Any test beats no test at all
3) the earlier the stage of the colon cancer, the better the outcome!
