(15 May 2017) The Moscow City Court on Monday rejected Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny's appeal against paying 20,000 Roubles (350 US dollars) in fines for his part in organising an unsanctioned protest on 26 March 2017.
Navalny, who served a 15 days of jail time for the same charge, was absent from the hearing and was represented by his lawyer, Olga Mikhailova who said his legal team had filed a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights regarding his arrest.
March 26 was marked by Russia-wide anti-corruption protests, in large part organised by Navalny and his team, none of which were sanctioned by the government.
Navalny is also serving a five-year suspended jail sentence on an embezzlement charge that Mikhailova said authorities had repeatedly attempted to convert into a custodial one.
The guilty verdict, handed down at a trial in February, has cast doubt on Navalny's plans to contest Vladimir Putin in Russia's 2018 presidential election as those with felony charges are banned from standing.
