A flyway is a flight path used by large numbers of birds while migrating between their breeding grounds and their overwintering quarters. Flyways generally span continents and often pass over oceans. Although applying to any species of migrating bird, the concept was first conceived and applied to waterfowl and shore birds. The flyways can be thought of as wide arterial highways to which the migratory routes of different species are tributaries. An alternative definition is that a flyway is the entire range of a migratory bird, encompassing both its breeding and non-breeding grounds, and the resting and feeding locations it uses while migrating. There are four major north–south flyways in North America and six covering Eurasia, Africa, and Australasia.
The system of bird migration flyways over Poland is complex since it is where three big migration routes intersect: the Atlantic flyway (significant migration corridor along the coast) (NE-W direction), the Alpine flyway (N-SW direction) and the Middle East flyway (N-SE).
During spring and autumn migrations significant numbers of geese and ducks can be found in Milicz Fishponds, in particular, significant numbers of bean goose (Anser fabalis) are present, totalling around 30,000 birds. This accounts for approximately 5% of the estimated Central, Southern and Western European population of this species. Overall, the Barycz Valley hosts 20% of the Polish population of the greylag goose, 15% of the gadwall, 10% of the black-necked grebe (Podiceps nigricollis), red-necked grebe (Podiceps grisegena) and Marsh harrier, and 5% of bittern, little crake, and common tern. Together with a few neighbouring areas along the Odra River, the project area is the only breeding site of the whooper swan in Poland.
Recording took place during first frosty days of autumn in the vicinity of Milicz Ponds in Barycz Valley (Stawy Milickie / Sarni Rów / Dolina Baryczy). I've used DIY dummy head binaural microphone with two pressure-type omni mics (DPA4060) fitted into the ear molds (Zoom F6 as a recorder).
Bird species heard in the recording:
Strix aluco / Tawny owl (Puszczyk Zwyczajny)
Anas crecca / Eurasian teal (Cyraneczka zwyczajna)
Anser albifrons / Greater white-fronted goose (Gęś białoczelna)
Anser fabalis / Taiga bean goose (Gęś zbożowa)
Anser anser / Greylag goose (Gęgawa)
Grus grus / Common crane ( Żuraw zwyczajny)
