Museum architecture around the world inspires design, provokes ideas, pushes the limits of the possible, and creates vibrant places for people. The design of gallery spaces, especially, enhances the experience of the museum, drawing visitors through to see more of the collections, providing spaces of quiet and contemplation, inspiring engagement with ideas, supporting technology, and requiring creativity on the part of the curators.
Based on chapters written for a recent book, four experts offer new analytical frames for understanding museum design and the experiences architecture can enable for visitors. The forum will be facilitated by Georgia Lindsay, School of Architecture and Design, University of Tasmania.
The presenters:
Matt Patterson, Assistant Professor in Sociology at the University of Calgary, will speak about Building Citizens by Building Museums: Royal Ontario Museum & Art Gallery of Ontario.
Shoshanah B.D. Goldberg-Miller, Associate Professor in Arts Administration, Education, and Policy at Ohio State University will speak about Transformational Architecture as Urban Catalyst: Toronto’s Royal Ontario Museum, Municipal Policy, and the Cultural Renaissance.
Jade Polizzi, Senior Instructor in Environmental Design at the University of Colorado Boulder will speak about Illuminating History: The Moesgaard Museum in Aarhus, Denmark.
Helen Norrie, Senior Lecturer in Architecture & Design at the University of Tasmania, will speak about Experience and Meaning in Museums.
