Chutes Provincial Park is said to be named after a historic logging chute that once diverted timber around the waterfall on the Aux Sables River. The river’s name, which loosely translates to “river of sand,” suits the landscape perfectly. Like many waterways in northern Ontario, the Aux Sables played an important role in transporting logs from inland forests to the Great Lakes. Just a few kilometres south lies the north shore of Lake Huron, connecting this quiet stretch of river to a vast network of waterways.
This part of the trail follows the river upstream along a steep embankment, with a couple of observation decks offering excellent views of the falls and rapids. The river tumbles over a series of ledges and chutes, too many to count, creating a constantly changing scene of moving water and rock. Near the bridge that closes the loop on the hiking trail, Mick and I found a peaceful spot by the river to stop for a snack and enjoy the fall colours—a perfect way to end the hike.
