Threshing Cancer is a charity/club based in the Mid-Kerry area which is holding a vintage threshing event on Sunday 29th September on the farm of Brendan Ferris in Beaufort, Co. Kerry to raise money for Recovery Haven, the Oncology Unit at Kerry General Hospital and the hospice room at St. Joseph’s Home, Killorglin. Everyone is invited to join us for this eclectic picnic but this unique occasion will be of particular interest to the farming community, historians, teachers, and those with an interest in heritage. This large-scale event will encompass 35 acres.
It is our intention to display and work all methods of threshing beginning with flail threshing, invented by the Chinese for rice and brought to Europe by the Romans for cereals like oats and wheat. The first mechanical thresher was invented in 1784 cranked by hand and by pedal. We have both mechanisms fully restored and ready to work on the day. Historically, the next advancement involved horses turning a gearbox which itself turned a threshing drum. This is a big attraction as people like to see animals working these machines. This method didn’t clean the grain of the shell and other unwanted materials, therefore a winnowing machine would have been used. This fanned air through screens separating grain from chaff. All of these were hand-cranked.
