Fantastic song, pretty much unknown, which I stumbled across a few years ago when listening to Dawn Upshaw’s great recording of Vernon Duke tunes. Locating the sheet music turned out to be quite a treasure hunt, but I was finally rescued by Rebecca Caine who, in addition to Gloria DeHaven, is one of the few singers to perform it. And now, me!

Uke key: C. The lyrics deal with a relationship where the feeling has drained away, leaving only an empty desire to hang on to something that no longer exists. The dark mood is mirrored in the harmony, both in the verse and the chorus. Although the key is C, the tonic chord makes only a few brief appearances. The verse ends on a dominant of E minor, and the chorus begins with an E-9 chord, which may be a ii of D, but eventually moves to a Cmaj7 at the end of the A section. One of the most striking bits is at the end of the bridge, coming back to A, at the words “He was locked up in my heart, I’ll hear words without music,” where we have a chromatic ascent: E - F - F# (= the minor ninth of E minor) through the chords E7#5 & A7b9#5.

This is the debut video of an instrument built for me by Pat Megowan, one of the foremost builders nowadays, who has also made instruments for the likes of James Hill, Gerald Ross, Cathy Fink, and many others. I approached Pat a few years ago about making a tenor and, after a longish wait, I finally received Siegfried the Uke back in May. It’s a “lyric tenor,” with a bit longer scale than a standard tenor. The back and sides are ebony, and the top is sinker redwood. I don’t know much about the physics involved, but my understanding is that the extra length affects the overall acoustic response. At any rate, the proof is in the playing - it is a simply a fabulous instrument to hear and to play.
