Here is a piece that could easily be mistaken for an unknown piano work of Schubert! It was actually published in 1878, and is by the much later German composer, pianist and organist Anton Schmoll (1841-19??), who abandoned an early career as a mining engineer to become a musician. He settled in France in the 1860s, eventually living in Paris, where he became a friend of Heller. He was also interested in astronomy and metaphysics, and was a member of the circle of Camille Flammarion. You can read a fascinating article written during his lifetime here: http://bit.ly/1mi5ofl . This attractive little piece is prefaced by some words by Goethe (I'm not sure which work they come from - Faust?) in a French translation by Jules Abrassart, which roughly translate as 'A glance, a smile; spellbound henceforth. And in her humid realm, he follows her for evermore'. In pairing the undine with a fisherman, it is quite possible that Schmoll was inspired by the scenario of Jules Perrot's ballet 'La Naïade et le pêcheur' which had been staged in Paris in 1874. The piece is dedicated to Marie Ribes, a professor at the Lyon conservatory.
