Описание: The United States' Rust Belt region was once a bustling industrial hub – and as its factories closed, they left more than empty buildings in their wake. Metals and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) still linger, contaminating nearby air, soil and water.

At the University of Pittsburgh, the Rust to Resilience Environmental Chemical Research Center (R2R) has built a team of clinicians, engineers, toxicologists and epidemiologists to study exposures to metals and PFAS. Their work aims to develop strategies to mitigate health risks associated with these chemicals and to prevent future exposures.

Though the Rust Belt sees more widespread contamination from metals and PFAS than many parts of the world, they're far from being the only region to face this issue. R2R's work will give the tools to fight metal and PFAS exposures to researchers and clinicians across the globe.
