Beneath the empty streets of Centralia, a fire has been burning since 1962 - and it shows no signs of stopping. But why did the government truly abandon this town, and what is happening to the earth there right now? This is the deep dive into the 60-year disaster that inspired Silent Hill.
The Centralia mine fire has been burning beneath Centralia, Pennsylvania since 1962, and may continue for another 250 years. This abandoned coal town went from 2,761 residents to just 4 people today because of an underground coal fire that consumed an entire community.
On Valentine's Day, 1981, 12-year-old Todd Domboski fell into a 150-foot sinkhole filled with toxic gas in his grandmother's backyard. He survived by grabbing a tree root. The sinkhole opened because of the coal seam fire burning 300 feet beneath the surface, a fire that started from a trash dump burn in May 1962 and entered the abandoned mine network through an unsealed 15-foot hole.
This Centralia Pennsylvania documentary explores how the anthracite coal fire spread through the Mammoth Vein, the failed government suppression attempts that cost millions, and the eventual evacuation under eminent domain. From the famous Graffiti Highway (now buried) to the inspiration for Silent Hill, Centralia remains one of America's most haunting ghost towns and a warning about industrial legacy.
