This video shows how to pack the gas filter with sifted biomass feedstock. One advantage of using your feedstock as one of the stages of filtration is the ability recover some of the energy from tar condensates. When the filter media needs changing, the fuel-grade media at the bottom of the filter can be dried and re-used as fuel, recovering the considerable amount of energy from the tars that condense on them.
The filter media's purpose is to capture the excess tars that are produced during start-up and shut-down, since the reactor temperatures are not hot enough to crack the tars into light non-condensing combustable gases during the start-up and shut-down processes. Once the reactor is up to operating temperature (800˚-1000˚C) tars percolating through the char bed at these temperatures end up cracking into hydrogen and carbon monoxide which is consumed by the engine, so the energy content of tars can be safely reclaimed from the fuel grade filter media.
