Ofsted's renewed education inspection framework: main changes

Описание: 🔍 What are the main changes we’re making to education inspections?

When Sir Martyn Oliver joined Ofsted as His Majesty’s Chief Inspector in early 2024, he made a commitment to improve how we inspect education and how we report our findings. We’ve run an extensive consultation, and published our response.

From 10 November, our inspections will look and feel different.

Here’s some of what we’re changing 👇

New report cards: with clearer, more detailed insights for parents, carers and learners. They will have a 5-point grading scale and summaries describing strengths and areas for improvement – and they have the backing of parents.

New evaluation areas: the aspects of education provision that we assess during inspections. They are tailored to reflect the priorities, contexts and responsibilities across all types of education we inspect: early years, schools, further education and skills, and teacher training.

New inspection toolkits: designed to support professional, constructive conversations between inspectors and provision leaders, about strengths and areas for improvement. Toolkits set out what we'll focus on during inspections and how we'll decide between grades. 

Inclusion at the heart: we’ve put a sharper focus on how providers support children and learners who may face barriers to learning, especially those who are disadvantaged, have special education needs and disabilities (SEND), or are known to children’s social care.

A more collaborative inspection experience: still rigorous but with supportive conversations about what's working well and what could improve.

We’ve also made many other changes, including some specific to different education provision and types of providers.
