I am scratch building a low-relief Victorian hotel out of card on my N Gauge model railway layout, Chandwell. In Part Two of the series, I show you how I used cheap cereal packet card to mock up the building so that I can be sure that the design I have chosen for the building is going to work.
By using the free software, Inkscape, to create the layout of the hotel, I can easily print the designs onto sticky labels and mount them onto empty cereal boxes.
A bit of scoring and cutting later and I have a solid construction in 3D that I can use to test out my ideas and check that I am on the right lines for the ultimate building.
In this video I also give you a very brief overview of a really simple method I use to get roofs all lined up. The roof of this hotel is going to look really complex once it is finished and it will be one of the building's most defining features.
The techniques I am showing can be used to help scratch building in any scale, not just N Scale, so whether you model 00 gauge, O gauge, HO gauge, or anything else - take a look at this and see if using cereal packets to help your scratch building designs is for you.
