It’s been fun riding along with Lolo Zouaï’s artistic evolution over the last half decade. In 2019, the worldly pop singer made a fetching first impression on our DSCVR stage, where she breezed through “High Highs to Low Lows,” the title track of her debut project. Listening to those twelve pop-hop jams felt like being whisked away to the coolest clubs to hang with the hottest people, while leaving room for plenty of emotional fallout in the morning. Paris. Brooklyn. The Bay. Being as well-traveled as she is has informed a certain amount of artistic curiosity. She stitched trad French music with booming 808s on “Galipette.” Last year’s ‘PLAYGIRL’ project conceptualized a lusty underworld set in 3004. Now she’s cooly swerving back into her personal pathos with “Crying In The Carwash.” In Lolo’s words, it’s about “when you wanna cry & dramatically lean out the window of a car on a rainy day… but it’s sunny outside.” That’s pretty accurate considering the juxtaposition between the new single’s infectious breakbeat and devastating lyrics. Who says you can’t dance and cry at the same time?
