Today, I took the 2020 Renault Duster dCi for a spin — and if you're familiar with the older 2015 or 2016 Duster models, you're in for a bit of a surprise."
Let’s start with first impressions. Compared to the 2015 and 2016 models, the 2020 Renault Duster feels like a more grown-up version of itself. Still rugged and ready for adventure, but this time with a sharper suit and a few new tricks up its sleeve.
On the outside, the design has evolved — it’s chunkier, more refined, and modern. The lines are bolder, the headlights have that signature LED DRL flair, and the grille looks a lot more upmarket. If the old Duster looked like it belonged on a dusty trail, the 2020 model looks just as comfortable parked outside a boutique coffee shop.
Inside — and this is where the biggest difference lies — the cabin is leagues ahead. The old models were, let’s be honest, a bit utilitarian. Hard plastics, basic layout, and not a lot of tech. But in the 2020 dCi? Renault stepped it up. The materials feel better, the seats are more supportive, and finally, we have a proper infotainment system that doesn’t feel like it was added as an afterthought.
Under the hood, the 1.5-litre dCi diesel is still doing its job reliably — but it feels a bit smoother now. Less noisy, better insulated. It’s not a rocket ship, but the torque kicks in early, and it pulls confidently even when fully loaded. Compared to the older models, throttle response and refinement have noticeably improved.
Now, ride comfort. The 2015 and 2016 Dusters had that soft, floaty suspension that handled rough roads but felt a bit wallowy in corners. The 2020 Duster tightens that up just enough. Still great on gravel — which is what this car was made for — but with better body control on tarmac. Renault’s made it feel more stable, more composed.
Fuel economy? Still excellent. You’re looking at around 5 to 5.5L/100km depending on how you drive — and the 6-speed manual gearbox is smooth, though the throws are a bit long.
One thing I appreciated today was the improved driving position and visibility. It’s still that commanding SUV perch, but the seat and steering adjustments now give you more control, especially if you’re tall like me.
That said, not everything's perfect. There’s still some wind noise at highway speeds, and while the infotainment is better, it’s not class-leading. But for the price point? It's hard to complain.
🎙️Conclusion:
"If you’re coming from the older Duster — especially the 2015 or 2016 — the 2020 dCi feels like a serious upgrade. It keeps the DNA that made the Duster so popular: affordability, simplicity, and ruggedness. But it now brings comfort, tech, and refinement to the table.
Is it worth the switch? Absolutely — especially if you’re looking for a budget-friendly SUV that can actually take on dirt roads without breaking a sweat.
