The island prison Alcatraz, which was named the "ultimate secure prison" during its time, was supposed to be an inescapable prison that held America's most incorrigible public enemies.
However, the reputation was shattered one summer night in 1962 by three men –who- well, did the exact opposite of what they were supposed and escape from Alcatraz
Throughout the world, the story of these three men resounded, the news traveled as far as it could reach, some people praising them, others vilifying them- but one thing everybody agrees on is that they achieved a feat like no other. To know a big deal, this feat is, first we have to find out more about Alcatraz. What was Alcatraz? A quick backstory - Alcatraz was a federal prison located on Alcatraz Island a quarter-mile along the coast of San Francisco. It was believed to be America's strongest prison used to hold notorious criminals from other prisons. Some of America's most famous and notorious criminals like Al Capone and George Kelly were housed in this prison.
According to reports, the prison authorities weren't particularly big on privacy. Each prisoner had their cell, but that didn't make any difference. The daily routine and whereabouts of the prisoners were monitored strictly. 13 official counts were made every 24hours, and a host of extra strict conditions were set up just to make sure the prisoners remain within the perimeters of the prison. Despite the tight security, 36 men tried 14 separate escapes. Nearly all were caught while some did not survive while making attempts. Needless to say, this was a big slap to the reputation of the famous prison but apart from that the way the prisoners were a big mystery and of course in typical, the FBI set out with resources and all hands on deck to try to solve the mystery.
THE INCREDIBLE ESCAPE PLAN
Three inmates escaped from Alcatraz prison, and their escape was named the famous prison break in 1962. There would be no great prison escape without inmates, so first let's meet our genius escapes. First- Frank Morris. Frank Morris, one of the inmate, was no stranger to the life of crime. His first run-in with the law was when he was arrested for his first crime at 13. In his late teenage years, he was arrested for crimes like armed robbery and hijacking. Despite his criminal past, Frank was no ordinary crook, he had an IQ of 133 and often showed he had supreme intelligence even while in prison. You could say he was a genius. An Evil Genius. The other two inmates were brothers, John and Clarence Anglin. Their crime resume features mostly robbing banks and other businesses.
In 1960 they were caught, and both received sentences that brought them to Alcatraz prison.
A 4th guy Allen west was also involved, but he did not leave Alcatraz with the trio. The escape plan started in December 1961 starting with a collection of old saw blades they found in one of the utility corridors. West suggested the escape, and he was the mastermind of the whole plan.
An inmate Clarence Carne who was friends with Morris had informed him about the access tunnels behind the cells. He then used the information to develop the overall escape plan.
Days turned into weeks. Weeks into months and plans were underway. They planned the escape for eight months with no evidence left behind. For six months they widened the ventilation ducts beneath their sink using the saw blades and metal spoons they smuggled from the dining hall.
They also made electric drills designed from a vacuum cleaner – they have a music hour which probably counts for something- but back to the story- The inmates were able to get to an unguarded utility corridor located behind the cells. They climbed to the roof of their cellblock, where they set up a secret workshop to proceed to stage 2 of their plan: tightening over 50 raincoats together to form life jackets and a 6-foot by 14-foot rubber raft. The inmates then created wooden paddles and converted a musical instrument into an air pump to inflate the raft, according to investigations.
THE ESCAPE
The date of the escape was on June 11 1962. And while it must seem like a century for the prisoners- the day finally came- and all systems went. They walked down the ventilation pipe. After that, They slid down the smokestack from the on-site bakery, climbed a 2 barbed fence, and made their way to the northeast shore where they launched the raft.
