British Rail Class 320 EMU – Scotland’s Commuter Workhorse
Join us on a fascinating journey through the history, design, and everyday heroics of one of Britain’s most overlooked electric trains—the Class 320 EMU.
Built in 1990 by British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL) at York, the Class 320 was designed to serve Scotland’s busy commuter lines—particularly those around Glasgow, the Clyde Valley, and Central Scotland. At a time when the aging Class 303s and 311s were nearing the end of their lives, these sleek three-car units were a breath of fresh air. Quiet, reliable, and cost-effective, they were tailored for short-haul, high-frequency services.
🔧 What makes them unique?
Unlike their faster Class 321 cousins, the 320s were purpose-built for local stopping services, with an original top speed of just 75 mph. But that didn’t stop them from becoming indispensable to thousands of daily commuters. Over the years, they’ve undergone numerous refurbishments—adding toilets, upgraded interiors, better accessibility, and even a speed increase to 90 mph.
📍 Where can you still see them today?
You can still spot Class 320s in daily service across the North Clyde Line (Helensburgh to Airdrie), Argyle Line, Cathcart Circle, Lanark, and Inverclyde routes. They frequently operate in tandem with Class 318 units and continue to be a familiar sight on ScotRail’s electric network.
🔄 From 320/3 to 320/4 – a second lease of life
In the mid-2010s, seven former Class 321/4s were refurbished, shortened, and reclassified as Class 320/4s, joining the existing 320 fleet and extending their usefulness even further. It’s a prime example of British railway ingenuity—repurposing and upgrading instead of replacing.
🏆 Why do rail enthusiasts love the 320s?
Because they’ve stood the test of time. These units may not be glamorous, but they’re tough, dependable, and deeply woven into the story of Scotland’s electrified railway. They've served millions, rarely missed a beat, and—over 30 years later—are still going strong.
