Nehemiah, Calling, and Courage — Pershore Community Church | Talk by Scott
Today Scott continues our journey through the book of Nehemiah, exploring what it means to recognise God’s calling, step into places of influence, and pursue bold, Spirit-led vision for the future of our church.
Anchored in Romans 15:20, we’re reminded of Paul’s ambition to preach Christ where He was not yet known — a challenge to all of us to build faithfully, not on someone else’s foundation, but on the unique calling God has placed on our lives.
We also reflect on 1 Corinthians 14:1, where Paul urges the church to eagerly desire the gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy. Scott draws on Bishop David Pytches’ helpful framework for understanding the prophetic process:
The Revelation — What is God showing us
The Interpretation — What does it mean
The Application — What must we do with it
From Nehemiah 1:1–2:5, we see a man positioned with purpose: “I was cupbearer to the king.” Nehemiah’s role wasn’t accidental — it was strategic.
And Scott challenges us with three key questions:
1️⃣ Where has God positioned us to be people of influence today?
Nehemiah stood before the king “very much afraid,” yet he spoke with courage and clarity.
2️⃣ Are we clear about what God is calling us to do — and are we willing to ask boldly for what we need?
Nehemiah models both prayer and action, approaching the king with a God-shaped request.
3️⃣ Are we praying into the things God is calling out of us — as individuals and as a church?
Before Nehemiah answered the king, he prayed to the God of heaven. His mission began in prayer, and so must ours.
Scott closes by inviting us to look ahead to our Big Hairy Audacious Goals for 2026 — a call to dream courageously, plan faithfully, and trust God for more than we can imagine.
