Phakama Pyoos, a resident of Mfuleni, was selected last year to partake in the Siyakhona Project, a project that trains young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to be video journalists. Phakama now runs her own video production company, working for large corporate clients, but still aims to use community media to create change around critical social issues like xenophobia, corruption, HIV-Aids and homophobia.Earlier this year she presented the Siyakhona Project to the World Design Capital Judges as part of Cape Town's bid for the title in 2014.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
