October 6, 2019 – We had just heard that Baker was critically ill in hospital. He told Rolling Stone magazine in 2013 that performing live left him exhausted because of his degenerative osteoarthritis and COPD from smoking. In 2016 Baker was forced to cancel a tour with his band Air Force band and underwent open-heart surgery.

He was named Number Three on Rolling Stone‘s “100 Greatest Drummers of All Time,” Baker a huge figure in Rock and Roll history, cofounding Cream with Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce in 1966. They only released four albums between 1966 – 1969 with their last LP “Goodbye” coming out after the band had broken up (the previous year)

Eric Clapton Told AXS-TV that he'd seen Buddy Guy play with a trio and thought that's what he wanted to do. Cream had six Top 40 hits including “I Feel Free,'” "Sunshine of Your Love,”(featuring that famous bass line created by Jack Bruce) and “Strange Brew” but they were much more than a hits band. Their third album “Wheels of Fire” was the world's first Double platinum double album. With all three members singing in the band (even though Bruce and Clapton did the bulk of the singing) they were one of the world's first rock supergroups.

'Disraeli Gears,” their second album was their masterpiece described by Chris Jones of the BBC as "a perfect encapsulation of the point where the blues got psychedelic and in turn got heavy" while Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic describes the album as "a quintessential heavy rock album of the '60s". In 1999 “Disraeli Gears,” was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame and in 2003 it was ranked No. 114 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time,

After Cream Baker joined Clapton in Blind Faith with Steve Winwood and Ric Grech. They would only release one album – the self-titled project from 1969 which featured the Winwood classic “Can't Find My Way Home.” Baker would write the last track on the album, “Do What You Like.”

In 1970 Baker launched Air Force where he spent years living and recording in Africa.

He was born Peter Edward Baker on August 19, 1939. He was 15 when he first got behind the kit and was a pioneer in mixing jazz fusion. World and rock drumming. He was also known for his long solos. As a member of Cream, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 1993.

Ginger Baker was one of the first superstar drummers with a larger than life personality. His style influenced John Bonham, Peter Criss, Neil Peart, Stewart Copeland, Bill Bruford, Alex Van Halen, Danny Seraphine, and Nick Mason.

John Beaudin has been in major market radio (Edmonton, Vancouver & Calgary) for 35 years and a music journalist since 1989. He graduated from Broadcasting school as a newsman so he would have the skills to write about the artists that inspired him since he bought his first album, “Madman Across The Water” by Elton John as a teen. In the '80s Beaudin was the host of the syndicated radio show “The Cross Canada Report” which had two versions (Rock and A/C). Beaudin was also asked to be a judge at the Juno Awards (Canada's answer to the Grammys) Twice. He has anchored every position in radio including morning and afternoon drive and was a Program and Music Director for The Breeze and California 103 in Calgary. He currently hosts the popular Lovesongs at QM-FM in Vancouver and on iHeartRadio.
