Description:
This is what East Los Angeles college looked like in 1969 and 1970. I did this video as a project for Cal State Long Beach. The video at the time (1970) was showing the structures and buildings in chronological order completion. The video now may be used for historical reference to the era. It's hard to believe it's changed so much
I am glad they built East Los Angeles College when they did because I was able to get my Associate of Arts degree there and get a job in the aerospace industry. Then I Worked on the Apollo with the astronauts and continued my higher education graduating with an Bachelor of Science degree from Long Beach State. I am now a retired.
.
My training in higher Math and Electronics at East Los Angeles was excellent because we had fine instructors. It was the instructors that counted ,
I am 80 years old now and I thought I would post his video to show what the college look like then back then during the beginning of Space age and the Civil Rights era before they are lost in time.
That being said:
When this college was built- the area was East Los Angeles and by modern standards it was classified as a ghetto area that was in need of of economic improvement. Society claims this can be achieved primarily through education.
In 1970 these video scenes consisted of some of the existing classroom then which were World War Two relics. The entire college in the forties consisted of such building. In the 40's drainage was a big problem.
What was odd is instead of replacing the bungles with building with classes rooms a stadium was built first. This Structure is the least required for education. It was the second largest stadium in los Angeles. The Auditorium was built-it was the largest-.again it was the largest auditorium in the school district. Both of these facilities are extremely expensive to built.
A token effort was made to provide classrooms in 1953- two, one story classroom buildings were constructed and several bungalows were brought in to substitute for some of the World War 2 barracks.
These bungalows were no better the the structures they replaced. The student suffered in these new bunglowes from the lack of adequate heating in the winter and unbearable ventilation in the summer.
A real effort was made in 1958 when the library was constructed. This library was adequate to serve the student needs. Finally in 1962 a whole set of buildings were completed. The Student center first. then the administration buildings and finally the classrooms. the physics and art buildings and all the rest of the classrooms a few years later. The fact that the Gymnasium was built 25 years after the stadium shows the lack of continuity for sports.
I thought when I made this video that the local community may have been deprived of economic growth due to educational deficiencies of the local college.
I believed now that it was an error in judgment on my part. History has proved me wrong. The people who went to this college went on to do great things for this community and the country. I known now it was because the quality and dedications of the instructors and administration we had back then. A lot of people in East Los Angeles would not have been able to get a college education including myself. The quality of the buildings did not matter then and all that has been rectified.
All that is water under the bridge now. East Los Angeles College is a very impressive college and friendly. It has always has been a great place to get a good education and find great friends.
