Phase I Exercises after surgery for Breast Cancer
Before you begin, be sure to check with your doctor to make sure it is safe for you to begin exercising.
These exercises have been approved by the surgeons I work with and my patients start as early as the first day after surgery. They are performed during the first two weeks, as tolerated.
Perform 5-10 repetitions, 3-5 times per day. It is common to have some discomfort at the surgery site. If you have significant pain, you may want to take the pain medicine prescribed by your doctor. If you develop increased swelling, stop the exercise and consult your doctor.
When you have achieved your full range of motion, you can progress to Phase II exercises in the next video.
Exercises:
1. Diaphragmatic Breathing
2. Shoulder shrugs, rolls, squeezes
3. Clasped hands with arms in front
4. Single arm raised in front of you
5. Hand behind your head; elbow in and out
6. Arm out to the side
7. Hands behind the back; rock them side to side
8. Circulation exercises for the elbows, wrists, and fingers.
