Set during the Civil War in El Salvador, this movie tells the true story of a child who must survive in a brutal society where child soldiers were forcibly recruited by both government and rebel forces. Some have criticized the film for focusing primarily on such abuses by the Salvadoran government -- when the same practices were also employed by anti-government forces. However, the film's riveting portrayal of the damage done to the children of El Salvador by both sides in this bloody conflict remains a stark reminder of the high price of allowing the human rights of society's most vulnerable members to be trampled. The rise of the notoriously violent MS-13 youth gang in both El Salvador and the United States represents some of the lasting fallout of the savage violation of the innocence of an entire generation of Salvadoran children.
Based on an autobiographical novel by Oscar Torres, the film was directed by Luis Mandoki and stars Carlos Padilla, Leonor Varela, and Xuna Primus.
