Reverse wooden fire saw

...Seeing as my old favourite Malayan cherry was performing so well with the fire plough I thought I would try doing a reverse fire saw with some.

...I've done it before with bamboo successfully but never had much luck with wooden fire saws either here or back in the UK when I tried it. This time though, after watching @dalemgumino demonstrate it, I thought I'd try his method & used a split stick.

...I bound the stick to stop it splitting further then wedged a piece of wood in to keep a decent gap in the split then used some toddy palm husk to block the bottom of the split & to catch the ember. At first I tried the blade at the same thickness as the plough but soon  realised it was too thick & on each subsequent attempt I gradually adjusted the blade thickness & the width of the split. Eventually I found thd sweet spot which was around 4mm gap in the split & a 6mm thick blade.

...I would say this method is definitely harder than rubbing the hearth up & down the blade but once you sort the dimensions out it is doable. Obviously the dimensions are going to vary depending on the material being used but I don't think they will be too far from what worked here
