Holešovice, known as Holešovice-Bubny from 1850 to 1960 after its merger with Bubny, is a district and cadastral area in Prague. Its annexation to Prague in 1884 marked a significant moment in the city's history as it was the first municipality, not a town, to be annexed at the time. Before this, Holešovice was part of the political district of Karlín. The district's central area is situated in the Prague Meander of the Vltava River on its left bank, and it includes Bubny and the Letná district on the hill.

The oldest known settlement dates back to the Middle Neolithic period (approximately 5000-4700 BC) when the first settlers living in light huts settled in these places.
Tracing back to its roots, Holešovice was originally a small agricultural settlement. However, it underwent a significant transformation in the last third of the 19th century. Located on the site of today's Prague-Holešovice railway station, it expanded to cover the entire area of the then uninhabited fields and meadows-filled floodplain of the Vltava meander, evolving into one of Prague's most critical industrial suburbs. This period of growth saw the construction of essential infrastructures such as the central slaughterhouse (today's Prague Market Hall), Bubenec railway station, gasworks, and a site for the Provincial Exhibition in Bubenec, just outside Holešovice. These developments necessitated further changes, including the construction of a funicular railway to Letná and the Letná-Výstaviště tramway. In 1892, a harbor was also built on the bank opposite Libeň.
In 1850, Holešovice was merged with the neighboring village of Bubny, and on 8 November 1884, Holešovice-Bubny was annexed to Prague as the VIIth municipal district. From this period (1925-1934), a photo album of 111 pictures of later demolished houses and yards has been preserved.
In 1928, the Libeň Bridge (then called the Masaryk Bridge, opened on 29 October 1928 as a gift for the 10th anniversary of the founding of the republic) was opened in place of the wooden temporary bridge from 1903, which further improved the traffic service of the district and is still the longest river bridge in the capital. A significant event was the construction of the modern building of the Electricity Companies in 1927 and the Trade Fair Palace in the late 1930s.
A flood in August 2002 inundated most of Holešovice. The library on Ortenovo náměstí, which had a depository of rare prints of the Municipal Library in its basement, was flooded to a height of about 1 meter; two structurally damaged houses in Komunardů Street had to be demolished.
The advantageous location of Holešovice in the so-called more expansive center led, especially after 2000, to the construction of office buildings and apartment complexes: reconstruction of the high-rise building of the former PZO Kovo near the Libeňský Bridge and, opposite it the construction of the Lighthouse Vltava complex as the first step towards the development of the port area; reconstruction of the former burgher brewery; construction of apartments in the former dairy and the multi-purpose complex Port7.
Today, Holešovice is a testament to Prague's progress, leading the way as a modern residential district. It boasts a mix of commercial and administrative buildings, many of which are housed in industrial and technical buildings that have been declared cultural monuments. The district's modernization, particularly evident in the newly created seventh district, is reflected in the construction of businesses of Prague-wide importance. This transformation has made Holešovice a vibrant and dynamic part of the city.
