The local municipality in Richards Bay says it's resolved to charge coal trucks a thirty rand fee per ton of coal as a measure to reduce the pressure on local roads and infrastructure. The City of uMhlathuze local municipality says it will also recruit traffic reservists to manage and monitor traffic in and around the port. The measures follow severe congestion on roads in and around the port of Richards Bay with truck volumes increasing over the past few years due to the high demand for coal globally.
