We idolize watches we cant afford, and sometimes compromise with watches that resemble another watch just to fill the void. For a watch addict that void never gets filled, but that’s a topic for another video. The Breitling Navitimer was one of the first watches I wished of owning when I started watch collecting, the aesthetics spoke to me, from the busy dial to the super cool and useful rotating bezel at that time history and heritage didn’t mean anything to me like it does now. What wasn’t attractive was the price tag, I could either take my family on a nice vacation or wear a vacation on my wrist. I decided to start exploring alternatives and it wasn’t long for me to stumble among a watch that’s loved in the industry the Seiko SNA411 AKA the flight master. I knew I had to have it the minute I watched a video review of it on YouTube. The more research I did the more I wanted it. Mind you this was about 2 years ago and word on the street was that Seiko had discontinued this model. As you can image prices started climbing up pretty quick, I managed to pick this one up second hand and although the top pusher never screwed down, I didn’t care, I bought it anyway. Looking back at that decision it maybe wasn’t the greatest one due to the fact that now the 200m water resistance has been compromised. Is it a simple fix? Maybe, but for the same amount of money that I may potentially spend on fixing it I could have just purchased a new one, but this particular watch has been on a 2 year journey with me and parting ways is not something I’m willing to do.
The watch is extremely wearable as it measures 42mm and it comes it at 13mm thick. The lugs on this watch are extremely close to the case, making the 42mm appear a lot smaller on your wrist and it mostly looks like all dial. But the fact that the lugs are so close to the case cause a huge pain when you’re trying to put a nato strap on it, so although this watch looks great on many different straps the fact that it has a 21mm lug width limits your options. However if you don’t mind the little gap a 20mm strap fits just fine. In fact all the straps featured on this video are 20mm. This watch is also very versatile as both men and women can wear it and looks super sporty and like a true tool watch. after all this watch was designed for pilots and engineers. With the bidirectional rotating bezel You can measure all sorts of things like fuel burn, MHP and even figure out how much to tip your waiter or waitress. None of those are things I can figure out or are willing to learn how to do, but the date complication and chronograph do come in handy and in case you really want to maximize the functionality of this watch you can always use the internal alarm that it comes with. Aesthetically speaking the splash of yellow throughout the watch ad a certain character that it not easily found on many watches and the fact that the watch comes with the 7T62 quartz movement it means this watch will keep almost Perfect time and it’s the on the go watch if you will. Quartz gets a lot of hate, but one must remember that this innovation killed a lot of watch brands and changed the watch world for many years, the technology needs to be respected and appreciated for what it is. Also you need to acknowledge that Seiko perfected this technology and the Grand Seiko Spring Drive movements dwarf a lot of the Swiss and German movements worth 5 times the price. The 200 meter water resistance really means you can wear this watch with confidence on a daily basis, but the Hardlex crystal can easily scratch, I would have preferred sapphire, however I do like how the crystal is domed as it gives it a certain vintage aesthetic if you will . Overall the watch is an absolute beauty and is a watch that I can get behind and recommend to anyone that is into busy looking dials. The question still remains , would you settle for a watch that’s not the one you have your heart set on or is a grail of yours or are you the type of collector that has the self control to wait as long as it takes to get that perfect piece?
