Join me as I embark on the journey of building a scale model of the Fram, a legendary ship of exploration. The Fram, constructed in 1892, was the first ship specially built in Norway for polar research. Designed by Colin Archer, it is renowned for its incredible resilience to ice pressure and its pivotal role in groundbreaking Arctic and Antarctic expeditions led by Fridtjof Nansen, Otto Sverdrup, and Roald Amundsen.

In this series, I’ll take you through every step of the building process, from unboxing the kit to the final finishing touches. Unlike my San Felipe model, where I went for a dark, weathered, and fearsome look, I aim to present the Fram as shiny and pristine—right out of the factory, ready for its first voyage. Along the way, I’ll share insights into this historic vessel, discuss modeling techniques, and showcase the artistry of recreating a ship that changed the course of exploration history. Perfect for model shipbuilders, history enthusiasts, and fans of craftsmanship!

In this video, I’ll show you how to rig the stays and attach the yards on my model of the famous polar exploration ship, Fram.
Stays are the ropes that support the masts from front to back, working together with the shrouds to keep everything upright and stable under the strain of the sails.
I’ll explain how stays are traditionally attached using a round turn, seizing, and the classic ‘mouse’—a clever little rope bulge that prevents the stay from slipping.
For this build, I followed the historical rigging methods described in Lennarth Petersson’s book rather than the kit instructions, and I’ll demonstrate each step as I secure the stays to the mast and the bowsprit.
In the second part of the video, I’ll show how I attached the yards to the foremast, set up the yard lift system, and tied the control lines neatly to the belaying pins using traditional knots like the Clove Hitch and Figure of 8.
