WIPO’s New Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge

Описание: In May 2024, WIPO member states adopted the Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources, and Associated Traditional Knowledge – the first WIPO treaty to include provisions specifically for Indigenous Peoples as well as local communities.

Contained in medicinal plants, agricultural crops and animal breeds, genetic resources have been building blocks for many inventions in life sciences.

Requiring patent applicants to disclose the origin or source of any genetic resources or associated traditional knowledge their inventions are based on, the Treaty is a step towards curbing “biopiracy”, the misappropriation of these resources.
