This video shows my attempt to make the world’s smallest, yet reliably functional, bow drill fire by friction set. For this “competition,” a common goal is for the kit to fit into an Altoids Breath Mints tin. Finding a collection of parts that would work together while also fitting neatly into my tin wasn’t nearly as easy as I had imagined. Despite the small size, this set actually took me quite a while to assemble and test – maybe five hours, scattered over a few evenings.
Although this is MY smallest ever bow drill set, it’s hard to say for sure that it’s truly the world’s smallest. It’s certainly a contender, but I suppose identifying the world’s smallest kit would ultimately depend on how “smallest” is defined. Below are some links to a few other really interesting, very tiny kits, as well as the dimensions of my own micro-mini set. You be the judge!

Here are the measured dimensions of my micro-mini bow drill kit:
Spindle (Horseweed/Mare’s Tail): length = 5.4 cm, diameter = 8 mm
Bow (Honeysuckle): assembled length = 22.5 cm, diameter = 7.5 mm (extensions)
Allows 6+ full spindle rotations for each forward/reverse half bow stroke.
Bow cord: micro paracord, diameter = 1/16”
Thunderhead (Pine Fatwood): length = 7.3 cm, width = 1.8 cm (widest point)
Fireboard (Sycamore): thickness = 7 mm, width = 1.4 cm, length = 8.2 cm
Overall mass (not including tin or leather coal catcher) = 32.6 gm (1.15 oz.)
Overall mass (including the tin and leather coal catcher) = 67.6 gm (2.38 oz.)
Altoids Tin Inside Dimensions:
Depth = 20.3 mm
Width (front-to-back) = 56.3 mm
Width (side-to-side) = 91.6 mm
As a final note, my kit is small enough that I can actually fit a second fireboard and spindle (same dimensions as above) into the Altoids tin and still snap the lid closed (i.e., neither the tin nor the lid is forced to bulge). I could instead include a fair amount of coiled up jute twine that I could fuzz up for use as a small tinder bundle.
Paytah Wahkan!
