"Darling Be Home Soon," written by John Sebastian, was the Lovin' Spoonful's 8th top 20 hit landing at the no. 15 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1967 and was written for the Francis For Coppola film "You're A Big Boy Now" (Whitburn, 2013). Sebastian stated that "From the singer's perspective, the verses are pleas for a partner to spend a few minutes talking before leaving . . . What made the song interesting is that you never knew if the other person was actually there listening or was already gone" (M. Myers, "Anatomy of a Song," 2016, p.76). The song did not become popular because of its presence in Coppola's film, it became more celebrated after Sebastian was asked to play a few songs acoustically after a rainstorm hit Woodstock (1969). The rainwater had to be removed from the stage so that Santana could plug in their amps and not worry about electrocution; "Darling Be Home Soon" was the fourth song of the five tunes he performed; funny, he was not scheduled to play at Woodstock at all, he arrived as a spectator (songfacts, 2026).
