If you've been watching the cigar review series thus far, you're likely aware that there is somewhat of an order in which I release these episodes. All of them are linked in one way or another and I like to cover brands whose "key players," or history ties in to following episodes. Therefore, I really should have covered Joya de Nicaragua first as far as Nicaraguan cigar reviews are concerned, as it is indeed the first ever Nicaraguan cigar brand created for export. It is the godfather of all Nicaraguan cigars.

In 1968, Juan Fancisco Bermejo and Simon Camacho established Nicaraguan Cigar Company - the first cigar company ever established in Nicaragua. Together, they created Nicaragua's first production line of cigars - Joya de Nicaragua.

Now just to make it clear, there were cigars made with Nicaraguan tobacco in Nicaragua before Bermejo and Camacho got there. However, these were traditional cigars made by the local people for local consumption and were not made to be sold for profit or export to other countries. These traditional Nicaraguan cigars were called "Chilagre." The natives had their own ways of handling the tobacco and making Chilagre. Generally, they would first pick and dry leaves from Nicaraguan tobacco plants that grew naturally in the wild. The leaves were then placed in holes that were dug in the ground and covered with earth where they would ferment. Afterwards, the leaves would be retrieved and rolled up into "cigars" by hand without the use of molds or tools. Wild Nicaraguan tobacco grows exceptionally large and so the end result was large and rustic, much like what the Tainos natives of Cuba were making when they were first encountered by Colombus some 500 years ago. In some parts of Nicaragua, Chilagre is still traditionally produced today.

The large fan leaves of the naturally occurring tobacco growing in Nicaragua must have been a welcome sight to Cuban emigres like Bermejo and Camacho. The great leaf would grow well here. And so, in 1968, they set up shop and established Nicaragua Cigar Company in Esteli, Nicaragua.

Joya de Nicaragua was the first brand produced by Nicaragua Cigar Co., and within a couple of years, the cigar was not only being exported to the United States, but to London as well. In other words, this was one of the first non-Cuban cigars to be sold on the same shelves and in the same shops as Cuban cigars. In only a couple of years, the company was producing several million cigars annually.
