I hiked the best part of Hadrians Wall in April 2025.
Starting in Carlisle, a historic city close to the western edge of Hadrian’s Wall, the path follows the River Eden eastward through fields and quiet countryside. This part of the route doesn’t offer much visible wall structure at first, but is rich in Roman and medieval history.
As the path continues east, you’ll pass through small villages such as Newtown and Walton, before entering more open farmland and gentle hills. The scenery becomes increasingly picturesque, with open views and quiet roads.
Approaching Brampton and Banks, remnants of the Wall and milecastles begin to appear more frequently. This area also includes the Turret 52a and Banks East – subtle but evocative traces of Roman fortifications.
As you near Chollerford, the landscape becomes more dramatic, with undulating terrain and broader views. Chollerford itself is a charming riverside village near the Chesters Roman Fort, one of the best-preserved cavalry forts along the Wall, offering a rewarding historical stop at the end of this stretch.
