In the 1970s in the United States, women were still not considered financially “independent.” To open a bank account, apply for a credit card, or take out a loan, a woman often needed the signature of a man, her husband, father, or a male guarantor. Banks did not view women’s income as reliable and used marriage, divorce, or widowhood as excuses to limit their financial access. This meant many women couldn’t start businesses, buy homes, or even have full control over their own money. In response, a group of eight women came together in the mid-1970s and founded a women’s bank. Their goal was simple but revolutionary: to allow women to access credit and financial services without needing a man’s approval. This bank was not just a financial institution, but a powerful statement , that women are capable, independent, and deserve full economic rights.
