Explore how ancient cultures used pottery to tell powerful stories! In this Curatorial Conversation, co-curators Megan E. O’Neil (Emory University) and David Saunders (J. Paul Getty Museum) discuss the newly opened exhibition Picture Worlds: Greek, Maya, and Moche Pottery. Together, they examine the painted terracotta vessels of three distinct civilizations—ancient Greece, the Maya of Central America, and the Moche of northern Peru—revealing how myth, ritual, and society were expressed through narrative imagery.
Speakers:
Megan E. O’Neil: Faculty in Art History, Hispanic Studies, and Native American and Indigenous Studies Initiative at Emory University
David Saunders: Associate Curator, Department of Antiquities, J. Paul Getty Museum
Exhibition Info:
Picture Worlds: Greek, Maya, and Moche Pottery juxtaposes three rich traditions of painted pottery, inviting reflection on how unrelated cultures visualized their myths, heroes, and cosmologies. Each vessel serves as a “picture world”—a dynamic expression of storytelling, artistry, and cultural identity.
Organized by the J. Paul Getty Museum and curated by Megan E. O’Neil and David Saunders.
