ThreeI Atlast, the third known interstellar object, was detected in 2025 and will make its closest approach to Earth on December 19 at about 1.8 AU. Its light curve pulses every 16 hours and 16 minutes with clocklike precision, cryovolcanic plumes rise in organized spirals, and a faint sunward tail appears to point back toward the Sun instead of away. Together, these features have pushed some scientists, including Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb, to ask whether Atlast is exotic ice or something engineered.
• The 16h16m luminosity cycle and what it reveals about Atlast’s internal “heartbeat”
• Cryovolcanism, nickel rich chemistry, and the hidden skeleton that may hold Atlast together
• The sunward anticola tail, extreme mass loss, and tightly collimated jets
• Why Atlast currently sits at Level 4 on the LOEB Scale of interstellar anomalies
NASA affiliated teams favor a natural cometary origin, while Loeb and others argue that the cumulative anomalies of Atlast strain standard models. The tension lies not in one impossible measurement, but in a pattern that will not fully line up with expectations.
If Atlast is natural, it will reshape how we understand interstellar comets. If it is not, it could be the first piece of technology ever confirmed from beyond our star. What do you think really happened out there?
