China’s Medog Dam is a proposed mega hydropower project planned for the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Medog County, Tibet, near the eastern Himalayas. If completed as envisioned, it would surpass the Three Gorges Dam to become the world’s largest hydropower station, generating enormous amounts of electricity by harnessing the river’s dramatic drop in elevation.
The project is promoted as a major source of clean energy for China, but it has also raised environmental, seismic, and geopolitical concerns, particularly for downstream countries like India and Bangladesh that rely on the same river system.
