Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther is praising the success of the "Non-Fatal Shooting Pilot Program" initiated by Columbus Police, which plans to expand it next year.
Launched 18 months ago in the South Linden and Milo Grogan neighborhoods, the program aims to break the cycle of violence. The program itself is the application of another pilot program for the homicide unit started in 2022.
"We've honed a new, effective way to prevent and reduce crime in our city," Ginther said.
The program has significantly improved the city's rate for solving non-fatal shootings, with a total of 484 charges filed since its inception.
"Our current city-wide rate for solving non-fatal shootings is about 46 percent. But in our pilot project, that rate is 75%," Ginther said. He emphasized that the program's impact goes beyond statistics, saying, "It's dozens of families getting justice and countless acts of retaliation prevented before they can happen."
