What We Found Beneath the Kitchen Floor…...of the MANOR

In this episode, things really start to get messy.

After Christmas, New Year, and a busy January, we’re finally back at the house and properly getting stuck into our renovation plans. With new subscribers joining us on this journey, we’re bringing you up to speed as we begin clearing out the kitchen, dining room, and sitting room and prepare to take our first steps into the fabric of the house itself.

As part of our plans to re-plumb and rewire this section of the manor, our architect and British Heritage have asked us to create a series of inspection holes one in the kitchen floor, one in the ceiling, and one in the roof of an upstairs bedroom. Simple in theory… less so in reality.

Before we can dig, though, we have to clear rooms that haven’t been emptied in years. From the old nursery bathroom, to the orange room, the yellow bedroom, and the avocado bathroom, we work our way through carpets, furniture, paintings, and memories — with help from family, friends, and Big Al (who just happens to be a professional framer).

Along the way:

Rooms are stripped back

Paintings are carefully wrapped

Raff gets stuck into demolition

Alan ends up seeing a paramedic

And we uncover unexpected layers beneath the kitchen floor

What we thought would be earth turns out to be something very different — leading us to dig into old photographs from nearly 100 years ago to understand what once stood here.

This could be the end of Part One… or just the beginning.
